Affordable Housing & Homelessness

Everyone should have a safe and affordable place to live.

I support the creation of additional affordable housing units in Guelph. Importantly, I want these units to be integrated within regular housing in two ways:

1) by requiring that developers include a certain number of affordable units within every new residential development project, and

2) by putting incentives in place to encourage owners of existing rental housing (from apartment buildings to house basement apartments) to enrol some of their units in an affordable housing program.

In order to achieve this, I support:
  • a reduction in development fees related to the affordable housing units that are to be included within new development projects.
  • the development of a policy setting out timelines for the processing of development and building applications, which clearly states that the review of those applications meeting or exceeding the target number of affordable units will be prioritized.
  • a tax rebate for private homeowners that are willing to rent out an affordable housing unit (examples include, but are not limited to, basement apartments and duplexes).
